The Ten Commandments of a Dog’s Life

The Ten Commandments of a Dog’s Life

  1. My life will likely last 10-15 years. Any separation from you will be painful for me. Please remember this before you bring me into your home.
  2. Give me time to understand what you want from me. I may not always get it right at first, but I’m trying my best to learn.
  3. Trust me. Your trust is essential to my well-being and happiness.
  4. Don’t stay angry at me for long, and never lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends. I only have you.
  5. Talk to me. I may not understand all your words, but I know your voice and the emotions behind it when you speak to me.
  6. Remember that I’ll never forget how you treat me, whether it’s with kindness or otherwise.
  7. Before you hit me, remember that I have teeth strong enough to hurt you, but I choose not to use them because I love and trust you.
  8. If I seem uncooperative or lazy, please check to see if something’s wrong. I might not be feeling well, or I could be hungry, tired, or simply getting older.
  9. Take care of me when I grow old. Just as I’ve been there for you, I need you to be there for me in my later years.
  10. Stay with me during my hardest moments. Don’t say, “I can’t bear to watch” or, “Let it happen while I’m not there.” Everything is easier for me when you’re by my side. Remember, I love you.
